Companies there are rumored to keep a “Peking special” (again, my term) set of books, to show China’s tax men, as well as the “Westerner special”, and the real books.
In the last couple of weeks, one of Frank Gaffney’s guests on his Secure Freedom Radio show was talking about the “state secret” and three sets of books aspects of modern Chinese accounting, and compared it to Russia in the years following the “fall of the Soviet Union”.*
The guest mentioned cases where people went into Russian businesses, asked to see the books, and were refused. When they then insisted, they didn’t make it alive out the front door. The companies were ordering hits on them right in the building.

I’m pretty sure we are the only country that has de jure protection of most basic individual rights baked into the nation’s respective constitution. And almost certainly that one.
Some nations (e.g. France, India, Israel) have limited private ownership of firearms, and many nations, especially smaller nations with big, mean, or formerly mean, neighbors (e.g. Switzerland, I think Sweden, and again, Israel,) have universal military service, and large reserve forces, who are required to keep infantry rifles and ammunition in impecable working condition in their homes, like a modern day version of our Minutemen.
Taiwan has traditionally had universal male military service, and has always been under the threat of aerial and amphibious asssault by the ChiComs. So it may very well be in the 2nd category. Don’t know if it is in the 1st.
